Lancashire Cricket Club
- The Challenge
We were approached by Lancashire Cricket Club to integrate new LED and digital infrastructure at their home ground Old Trafford, as part of the stadium’s ongoing refurbishment to make it ‘The Northern Nest in Cricket’. The aim was to enhance the fan experience of the game, as well as other events hosted at the multi-purpose venue. Software was key to the infrastructure to support the simple management of content, such as stats/ figures/ replays, necessary for understanding the sport.

- The Approach
As experts in Stadium LED infrastructure, we knew that understanding the client’s needs to develop a bespoke solution to best support the venue’s individual needs was paramount. The challenge with all live sport is to ensure that fans get the same experience within the crowd as they would from watching it at home, so a clear display of information is key. We, therefore, knew we had to work with the latest LED technology to provide the optimum colour, clarity and definition – even in direct sunlight. Lancashire made it clear that they needed to be able to easily upload content themselves, so software needed to straightforward and flexible with all formats of video and image content. Both connectivity and scalability were a factor, it was important for the club to have a fully integrated system to pair with all technology – whether that be apps on fan’s phones or other hardware within the venue.
- The Solution
We used the latest LED from Samsung to build the screens and interface them with the stadium’s existing steel infrastructure to create impactful and dynamic displays.
This included:
2x 60SQM Jumbo Displays in the vicinity of the ground’s point and tram areas
- Samsung 16mm pixel pitch LED configured into 10×7 cabinet arrangements
- Bespoke interface frame
2x 56m wide by 956mm high Mid-Tier Displays on the grounds B & C stands
- Samsung 16mm pixel pitch LED
- Custom brackets
- Rail system to aid the speed of install
After taking inspiration from the US, ChyronHego’s Click Effects content control and delivery solution was specified as the software platform for its ability to quickly and easily display visuals at a press of a button. Not only does it support live content during the game; it works in the down-time to collate scores/averages and display any relevant information to the game in progress.
- HX Server to run underlying graphics and generate content to software platform
- Matrix Switcher to route live camera feed and video for layering and preview
- Outputs for delivering background graphics, scoreboards and advertising to mid-tier and jumbo displays
- Interchangeable outputs for Jumbo displays to switch to video via any IPTV STB box, digital signage platform, PC OR DVD
